Synopsis

“Garudayana” (means ‘the tale of Garuda’) chronicles the adventures of a newborn, Garuda, as he journeys to meet his elders. The life of the mythical fledgling is in constant danger, as the story goes that eating a Garuda brings everlasting life. But little Garuda is not alone in facing his enemies. A treasure hunter, Kinara, who first discovered the Garuda, and a band of other friends are also there to see to it that he comes to no harm.

What differentiates “Garudayana” from other comic books are the characters, which are taken from the Mahabharata wayang (Wayang is a traditional Indonesian puppet show). It contains Indonesian legend in it. like Garuda, Gatotkaca, the Punakawan Trio, Semar and the Pandavas. Eventhough some of those characters are also found in other country’s legend, Indonesia has its distinctive points that differentiate it from the same character in other country.

“Garudayana” is the manga-meets-wayang comic book. It promotes the traditional wayang characters in a new way of visualization and storyline, with the usage of ‘batik’ pattern on panels and effect.
